What Is an AI Travel Planner and Should You Actually Use One?

Not long ago, planning a trip meant opening a dozen browser tabs, cross-referencing hotel reviews across three different sites, building a rough itinerary in a spreadsheet, and still arriving unsure whether the timing made sense. That process has not disappeared entirely, but it has changed considerably. The AI travel planner has stepped into the middle of it and, for a growing number of travellers, changed it in ways that are genuinely useful.

An AI travel planner is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to generate personalised trip itineraries, compare flight and hotel prices, suggest activities, and in some cases handle bookings, all based on the information you provide. The technology has matured quickly. From October 2024 to July 2025 alone, the share of travellers using AI for trip planning more than doubled, rising from 11% to 24%, according to Global Rescue’s quarterly traveller sentiment surveys. Among travellers under 35, the adoption rate reached 40%. A broader Accenture survey of 18,000 travellers across 14 countries found that 80% are already using generative AI for travel in some form. These are not the numbers of a novelty. They are the numbers of a tool going mainstream.

Understanding what an AI travel planner actually does, where it is genuinely useful, and where it still falls short is worth knowing before you hand your next holiday over to an algorithm.

How an AI Travel Planner Actually Works

Most AI travel planners operate through a combination of natural language processing and real-time data retrieval. You describe what you want in plain language, your destination, travel dates, budget, travel style, and any specific preferences, and the system converts that into structured parameters it can act on. From there it pulls in flight data, hotel availability, activity recommendations, opening hours, travel times between locations, and other logistical details, and assembles them into a coherent itinerary.

The better platforms go several layers deeper. They account for the sequencing of a day’s activities to avoid backtracking across a city, adjust recommendations based on how much walking you are likely to do between stops, factor in rest time if you request a relaxed pace, and flag potential conflicts like a Monday museum visit when the attraction is closed. At the most capable end of the market, tools like iMean AI can plan multi-city trips across several countries, compare transport options including train versus flight for each leg, recommend hotels filtered by neighbourhood, proximity to local markets, and Wi-Fi availability, and allow real-time adjustments when plans change.

The technology behind this is layered. Natural language processing interprets what you mean rather than just what you typed. A knowledge layer draws on vast amounts of travel content, including destination guides, reviews, and local expertise. And increasingly, live data connections allow tools to pull real-time flight prices and accommodation availability rather than relying on static information that may be out of date.

Where AI Travel Planners Genuinely Save You Time

The clearest win for the AI travel planner is research compression. Building a well-structured ten-day itinerary across multiple destinations from scratch can easily consume ten to fifteen hours of reading, cross-referencing, and decision-making. An AI tool compresses that into minutes, producing a usable draft that most travellers then refine rather than rebuild from the ground up.

An independent tracking exercise across 15 trips in 2025, reported by travel platform Natouris, found that AI planning tools saved an average of 7.2 hours of research time and around $340 per trip through better flight and hotel pricing. On any trip costing more than $1,000, the return on the time invested in using these tools is generally positive. That is a concrete, measurable benefit rather than a vague promise of convenience.

For complex multi-destination trips involving multiple travellers arriving from different cities, the advantage is even more pronounced. The kind of routing logic required to plan a route from Kraków through Prague, Ljubljana, and on to Dubrovnik, while minimising backtracking, factoring in transport options between each leg, and matching accommodation to arrival times, is exactly the type of problem where AI outperforms a human planning session by a significant margin.

Google has also moved aggressively into this space with its AI Mode Canvas tool, which pulls real-time flight and hotel data, integrates Google Maps reviews and photos, and allows conversational refinement of a trip plan within a single interface. Its AI-powered Flight Deals tool, which allows travellers to describe their trip in plain language and receive price-optimised options, has expanded to more than 200 countries and supports over 60 languages.

The Best AI Travel Planner Tools Right Now

The market for AI travel planning tools has expanded rapidly, and the tools vary considerably in what they are actually good at.

Mindtrip, named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2025, combines a chatbot-style interface with an interactive map layer and has attracted nearly 350,000 monthly visitors in the United States within its first several months of operation. Its strength is visual, map-based discovery and collaborative planning for groups or couples exploring destinations together in the early stages of trip ideation.

iMean AI is the strongest performer for complex, logistics-heavy trips involving multiple cities, varied transport types, and group coordination. In head-to-head testing with a multi-city Central Europe itinerary involving travellers flying in from New York, Toronto, Sydney, and Tokyo simultaneously, it was the only platform to meaningfully address all the logistical constraints while providing specific hotel recommendations and route options.

Wonderplan is well suited to travellers who want to manage budget closely while building out a detailed itinerary, with real-time budget tracking that updates as you add and adjust elements. Tryp.com takes a different approach entirely, surfacing deals rather than building itineraries, and is particularly useful for flexible travellers who want AI to surface trip ideas they would not have considered based on the cheapest available dates from their location.

Where AI Travel Planners Still Fall Short

Adoption is high, but so is healthy scepticism among experienced travellers. In Global Rescue’s survey, half of all respondents said they prefer a blend of AI and human recommendations rather than AI alone, and only 4% said they prefer AI entirely. That distribution reflects something real about the current state of the technology.

AI planners can produce itineraries so efficiently optimised they become exhausting, packing every hour without building in the kind of breathing room that separates a good trip from a great one. Telling the tool explicitly to include a free afternoon or build at a relaxed pace solves this, but it requires knowing to ask.

Accuracy on specific venues, particularly restaurants and smaller local attractions, remains inconsistent across platforms. AI recommendations drawn from training data rather than live reviews can surface places that have closed, changed ownership, or declined in quality. Cross-checking key dining and activity recommendations against recent reviews on independent platforms remains sensible practice.

And for short trips to familiar destinations or repeat visits to places you already know well, the overhead of setting up and iterating with an AI planner often exceeds the benefit. These tools earn their value on complexity, novelty, and scale.

The Bottom Line

The AI travel planner is not a replacement for travel judgement or local knowledge. It is a research and logistics tool, and a genuinely impressive one when used for the right kinds of trips. If you are planning something complex, multi-destination, or time-constrained, these tools are worth trying. If you love the research process itself, or are heading somewhere you know well, you probably do not need them. The technology is moving fast either way, and the gap between what these tools could do a year ago and what they can do now is considerable.
